The Federal Indian Boarding Schools Initiative will receive $4 million.
The Department of the Interior announced the expansion of its Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative, committing $4 million to the digitization of oral history about the Indian boarding school policies.
From the 1600s to 1918, the American federal government routinely took Native American children from their Tribes, gave them “Christian” names, and forced them to speak English in abusive settings. Tens of thousands of children were taken during that time. An ongoing investigation by the Interior Department has found unmarked mass graves at some of those historic boarding schools.
“Federal Indian boarding school policies have touched every Indigenous person I know. Deeply ingrained in so many of us is the trauma that these policies and these places have inflicted,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. “This is one step, among many, that we will take to strengthen and rebuild the bonds within Native communities that federal Indian boarding school policies set out to break.”
